WORD:
Youth Speaks fund raiser at Mezzanine Sept. 14 with spoken word, music
San Francisco literacy group Youth Speaks
will kick off Part II of its Summer Fundraising Series with an evening
of music and spoken word at San Francisco club Mezzanine on Thursday,
Sept. 14 from 6:30 to 9 pm with performances by several National Poetry
Slam Champions.
Founded in 1996, Youth Speaks is the leading nonprofit presenter of
spoken word performance, education, and youth development programs in
the country. In over 40 cities, more than 250,000 young writers ages 13
to 24 years old have delivered their own messages through spoken word
to millions of their urban and suburban peers.
Youth Speaks noted that its participants are politically aware,
critically engaged, unafraid to speak, and most importantly -- picking
up the pen and grabbing hold of the microphone to move themselves into
positions of power. Through spoken word, they are claiming a voice when
they’ve been voiceless, and access where they’ve been sidelined.
Proceeds from this event will allow Youth Speaks to continue educating
the next generation of leaders, self-defined artists, and visionary
activists through written and oral literacy. Donations are $20 at the
door, or you can pick up pre-event tickets at $15 here.
Mezzanine is located at 444 Jessie Street near Market Street.
