Bjork to reunite with The Sugarcubes ahead of a surprising new album
Electro singer Bjork, who
spawned dozens of copycat singers from the early 90s to this day, will
perform a reunion concert in her native Iceland with her former band The Sugarcubes, she announced on her
website. Meanwhile, she’s reportedly in the studio putting the final
touches on a new album with hip hop producer Timbaland.
Proceeds form Bjork’s November 17, 2006 show,
which marks The
Sugarcubes’ 20th anniversary and the first time they played together as
a band in 14 years, will benefit the indie label Smekkleysa SM that
helped launch her career more than a decade ago.
"All profit from the concert, with the support of FL Group, goes back
into Smekkleysa SM who will continue to work on a non-profit basis for
the future betterment of Icelandic music and artists," according to the
announcement. Smekkleysa is an indie label in Iceland that handles
Electro and experimental artists like Sigur
Ros and Gus Gus.
Since leaving The Sugarcubes, Bjork has done several widely-acclaimed
Electro albums such as Debut, Post,
Telegram and Homogenic
that helped bring Electronic music to mainstream attention. The club
diva’s rich voice, willingness top push creative boundaries, and
eccentric dress has also turned heads and made her somewhat of a
tabloid sensation in recent years.
Bjork’s latest project will venture into new territory with the help of
producer Timbaland, who recently said they’re working on a hip hop
album. While that’s quite a change from Bjork’s typical fare of Electro
beats, she has done some hip hop-inspired tracks before, notably on her
1995 album Telegram (Elektra). An album title and release date are
expected to be announced soon.
