WORD: 2009 Backspace Agent-Author Seminar Nov. 5-6 in NYC
Edited Press Release

The 2009 Backspace Agent-Author Seminar will be held November 5-6 at New York City's Radisson Martinique. This is the fifth annual event and includes two days of panels, workshops, and small-group meetings in the heart of the publishing world with more than 20 top literary agents on the program.

Thursday's program will focus on query letters. After a panel discussion on queries, registrants will break into small groups of no more than a dozen authors, where two agents will react to authors' query letters as though they'd received them as a submission, stopping the reading when the query stops working for them, and then explaining why.

During the 90 minute lunch break, registrants will have the opportunity to rework their query letters, and the workshops will resume after lunch with authors reading their new and improved query letters to a different pair of agents. The day will then finish with another agent panel.

Friday's program will be a similar combination of panels and workshops, only the focus will be on authors' opening pages using Backspace's popular "Two Minutes, Two Pages" format. Opening pages will not be reworked during the noon hour.

Participating agents

Jeff Kleinman (Folio Literary Management) • Paige Wheeler (Folio Literary Management) • Jennifer DeChiara (Jennifer DeChiara Literary Agency) • Colleen Lindsay (FinePrint Literary Agency) • Elizabeth Evans (Reece Halsey Literary Agency) • Emmanuelle Alspaugh (Judith Erlich Agency) • Stephany Evans (FinePrint Literary Agency) • Gina Panettieri (Talcott Notch Literary)• Laney Katz Becker (Folio Literary Management) • Diana Fox (Fox Literary)

Noon bonus session

Writing coach Kurt Opprecht is offering conference registrants free sample coaching sessions during the noon hour on both Thursday and Friday. Kurt is a certified writing coach who teaches at the Gotham Writers Workshops and has written articles and essays for The New York Times, The Economist, and the New York Sun, among others.

Registration at the 2009 Backspace Agent-Author Seminar is limited to 120 delegates. For more information check out the conference website
