Novelists Child, Connolly, Gericke, Sakey hit San Francisco for
Bouchercon
Hundreds of authors, publishers, literary agents and other book
industry participants are arriving this week in San Francisco to attend
Bouchercon from Oct. 14-17 at the Hyatt Regency. The conference, with a
focus on genres such as thrillers, mysteries, and crime novels, is one
of the largest annual book events on the calendar.
While much of the
action takes place among industry participants -- major publishers St.
Martin’s, Penguin, Random House, and others host private parties during
the week -- book fans will also find their favorite authors easily
approachable during official Bouchercon parties, discussions, and
panels.
Following are some key happenings that caught our eyes. For the full
2010 Bouchercon by the Bay schedule and additional details, click here.
Cocktail parties:
Thursday, Oct. 14.
Opening ceremonies and presentation of the Barry and Macavity Awards
from 6:30 to 7:45 pm. After getting your badges, get liquored up at the
opening cocktail reception sponsored by publisher William Morrow. It
begins at 7:45 pm at the Hyatt Ballroom. Eighteen authors including Lou
Berney, Robin Burcell, Jonathan Hayes, Val McDermid and others will be
signing their novels here. Want a first edition copy of your favorite
crime author signed? This is where you’ll score.
Friday, Oct. 15.
Respected thriller author Lee Child hosts his Reacher Creature party
from 8:30 to 10:30 pm at the Hyatt’s Atrium. Apparently the annual
event was a private party in the past, but this year it's open to every
Bouchercon attendee.
Wednesday, Oct. 13. In
town before the conference’s Thursday kick-off? Hit the Beat Museum in
North Beach at 7:00 pm for the San Francisco launch of Stephen Jay
Schwartz’s crime novel "Beat," one of the most entertaining
novels we’ve read in years.
