WORD:
'Voices of A People's History of the United States' author Howard Zinn
to hit SF
Author Howard Zinn will host a
performance of "Voices of A People’s History of the United States"
(Seven Stories
Press) with a sterling cast of readers and musicians
including Benjamin Bratt, Josh
Brolin, Stairwell Sisters, Diane
Lane and Clarence Thomas
on Thursday, February 26, event co-producer Haymarket Books announced.
Zinn, a
historian, playwright, social activist and author of 20 books who is
best known for penning "A People’s History of the United States," kicks
off the event at 7 pm at the Mission High School Auditorium, located at
3750 18th Street in San Francisco.
A People’s History of the United States has become an iconic textbook
among readers interested in different perspectives of American history.
It’s been widely assigned to classrooms as an alternative history
textbook, breaking the 1 million copies mark in 2003, and has had
several follow-up editions published since its first edition debuted in
1980.
General admission tickets to the event at $20, or $10 with a student
ID, are available at Bay Area independent bookstores including City
Lights Books, The Green Arcade, Modern Times Bookstore and Moe's Books.
You can also get tickets online at the People's History website.
Event co-producer Hay Market Books said that Premium "VIP" reserved
seating and the opportunity to make a donation to the Haymarket Books
Young Readers Fund is also available online, at a variety of levels,
including $100, $250, $500, and $1,000. For more information about VIP
ticket and donation options, please email Todd Chretien at toddchretien (at) mac.com.
This generous additional support will help Voices of a People's History
to organize performances in more communities and schools across the
country, and Haymarket Books to donate educational books to the
students and staff of Mission High School. Donations at the $250 level
and above will also receive a signed copy of the book Voices of a
People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove.
An interesting local angle not widely known is Zinn’s deal with former Dead Kennedys front man Jello Biafra's record label
Alternative Tentacles, which sells various forms of Zinn products
including books, films, CDs, as well as various other rare Zinn
materials.
