WORD: Sony Pictures shelves ‘The Bones’ project; Greenland in talks with new studios

When Sony Pictures announced last year that it had optioned Hollywood screenwriter Seth Greenland’s debut novel and tapped John Calley -- who is currently riding a wave of publicity after bringing The Da Vinci Code to the big screen -- as producer, The Bones (Bloomsbury ) appeared on a fast track to the big screen.

Not so fast. Sony recently shelved the project and it’s now getting shopped to new studios, WORD’N’BASS.com has learned.

The film version of The Bones was a somewhat surprising choice for Sony, which has made mainstream films geared to summer audiences like Bewitched and Spiderman in addition to The Da Vinci Code.

The Bones is an edgy and funny novel about a standup comic set against the backdrop of contemporary Hollywood with gold diggers, lushes and overpaid hacks among its main characters.

With Sony bowing out the project Greenland said it’s unclear which producer will take over the reigns. The Bones reportedly had director David Mamet involved as well.

In an unusual twist for the film industry, Greenland was able to attach himself as screenwriter rather than turn over its conversion to others. The screenplay is completed, he said. Greenland is represented by manager David Kanter of talent agency Anonymous Content.
