WORD: Academic Tiffany Baker to
debut as novelist with Warner Books
California author Tiffany Baker
parlayed nearly a decade of studying English literature into a career
as a novelist, after Warner Books snapped up her debut novel 'The
Little Giant of Aberdeen County.' Writers House literary agent Dan Lazar told WORD’N’BASS.com that
the pre-empt is a two-book deal, which will keep the debutant with
Warner for her sophomore project.
Warner senior
editor Caryn Karmatz Rudy
bought The Little Giant of Aberdeen County, about a girl who grows
physically and emotionally beyond her small town’s wildest
expectations. Warner hasn’t yet slated a publication date for Little
Giant.
For Baker, the book deal is a big shot in the arm for her literary
career. Unlike most debut authors, she already has an MFA from the
University of California at Irvine and a PhD in Victorian Literature.
"Little Giant is fabulous," said Lazar, who has become one of the book
scene’s hotter young agents. Lazar has sold at least 22 titles since
getting promoted to literary agent in late 2005 -- 15 adult books
and seven children’s books. While he represents all types of authors,
he is targeting more young adult fiction going forward.
"It’s been a busy year," said the New York City-based Lazar. "I’m
really looking for more of the same, but especially more middle grade
and (young adult) fiction, women’s fiction and narrative non-fiction."
